Caliper | Inspection of pipelines with a caliper

A brief description of the modifications of the PVM series calipers can be found in in this booklet.

Inspection of pipelines with a multichannel inline caliper

An APRODIT LLC specialist will come to the field or line facility with all the necessary equipment:

  • pig-gauge SKT with low-frequency transmitter PNT ;
  • inline caliper PVM with the necessary software;
  • a set of low-frequency receiver-recorders NPR-01 for temporary marking of the pipeline route when the caliper is passed through it;
  • cleaning pigs USO or SKT, as well as spare polyurethane discs, cuffs , metal brushes , magnets, etc. for them.

Disassembled Eight Channel PVM-6 Profiler

As part of your team of specialists, our employee will perform a pass gauging pig , and then in-line caliper .

Within a period of not more than a day after removing the caliper from the receiving chamber, you will be provided with an express report on profilemetry, from which you will learn about all critical cross-sections in your pipeline or will confirm their absence.

Discovered, rendered and dimensioned:

  • geometry and construction defects (dents, corrugations, ovality, plungers, chops, etc.);
  • radii and corners of all factory bends (automatic search and placement for angles from 10 degrees and bending radii from R = 1.5DN to R = 40DN);
  • foreign objects or a large amount of sediment (ARPD, gas hydrates, construction waste, etc.);
  • valves or ball valves not fully open;
  • defects in welds that could prevent the safe passage of cleaning or inspection pigs, including edge mismatches and thickness transitions;
  • distribution of temperature and pressure along the length of the pipeline.

Analysis of the data recorded by the caliper during the passage through the oil pipeline

After reviewing the express report, you make an informed decision about launching an inspection tool or cleaning pigs, or about the need elimination of bore in the designated places of the pipeline.

Our advantages

  • A navigation system consisting of three-axis gyroscopes and accelerometers is now installed in all PVM calipers.
  • All pipe bends (elbows) are visualized in the recorded data processing program.
  • Automatic algorithms are used to determine the radii of curvature and angles of rotation of the elbows.
  • Applies automatic girth weld placement into pipeline log.
  • The trajectory of the caliper movement (centerline of the pipeline) is calculated based on the records of gyroscopes and accelerometers, odometer records and geodetic coordinates of control points.
  • To improve the binding accuracy, additional time markers are used, which are loaded into the PVM data processing program from the memory of the NPR-01 receivers.
  • In the pipe log, it is possible to obtain GPS / GLONAS coordinates of all geometric features and pipeline defects for referencing them on the ground.
  • The towing section in PVM calipers is a standard SKT gauging pig, which is passed through the pipeline in front of the caliper to check the passability.
  • The passability of the PVM measuring section is always better than that of the towing section to prevent the caliper from getting stuck.
  • Possibility of inspection of pipelines of several diameters due to the quick change of measuring arms and towing section.
  • When analyzing PVM data and information about the distribution of pressure and temperature along the length of the pipeline, it is possible to draw conclusions about the distribution of deposits on the walls of the pipeline. This can be useful for selecting the optimal inhibitor or cleaning regime.
